Time to Get Ill!

The Beastie Boys have been around for almost 25 years. Think about that for a sec. Who in music lasts that long and continue to make music that doesn't completely blow?? Tough one huh? Kool Moe Dee? Nope. JJ Fad?? Na uh! Gerardo??? Think again mi amigo! I've always dug this group and the fact that they can stay relevant and continue to do what they do for the love of it all. It's a great honor to get to create some posters for a tribute show which drops some time in January. My inspiration came from the cover of the License to Ill album. Y'know, the one with the plane? It's gotta be one of the most memorable album covers I've seen and I thought that a series of travel posters featuring that plane would be fun since they've been all over the globe and have influenced so many while doing so. I chose Brooklyn (obviously), Atwater Village, cuz they had a studio there and recorded my favorite album in it (Paul's Boutique), and Tokyo, cuz the visuals and costumes in that Intergalactic video are hilarous and it definitely reminds me of their later years. Each of the posters tie heavily into the music videos they created (which are some of the best videos ever!). Check out that Beastie Anthology DVD if you haven't already. With the option to hear remixes and watch different angles of each video, I think it's one of the only DVD's out there that made full use of all those angle and sound options. A for effort! Only reason it isn't an A+ is cuz them License to Ill tracks ain't on there :( Anyways, I hope that you can get a good idea of where these are going and I'll post updates as soon as I start on the final artwork. Now, what's the time?????

I submit They Might Be Giants as a band that is still rocking after 25 years! (Actually, I think it's 26 or 27 now)

are you implying that there are pimps & hoes, backed by mariachi in atwater village? either way, these look cool. i'm in!

S#!+ Mark, you're right! I don't know if they have mariachi's anymore ;)

Yo little brother, if you're going to show Brooklyn, don't just show the Brooklyn Bridge with MANHATTAN behind it. Show the Brooklyn skyline. It's got a special charm that Manhattan just doesn't have. It's kind of like the opening of the Honeymooners' TV show.

Aside from that, I love the concepts.

You got it Vince! Excellent point. I guess I was thinking that if he were on the Brooklyn banks, technically it's what you would see in the b.g. along with the bridge. But this, being the theater of imagination allows me to do whatever the heck I want to right?? Plus, it just adds an authenticity to it. I'll check out that Honeymooners' sequence. Thanks Vince!!

Eric,

I know a few of the talented folks at Pixar (Ronnie, Enrico, etc) and have seen your work around the web (I used to do the Luxo blog too). I'm looking for an additional speaker for a Design workshop here in Banff in late November. Give me a shout at chad AT digitaldreammachine dot com or chad_kerychuk AT banffcentre.ca and I'll give you a phone number to call if you're interested. I think you'd contribute some great ideas and I really enjoy your design sense.

Cheers,

Chad

These look great... they take me back to the time when License to Ill was just about the only album I listened to for a while... A quick question: are you going to be finishing off the Indy series? I've got the first two, and want to know if/when I can expect the rest.

Wassup yo? Boieeee it's cool!
LOL.
They're trying to teach me how to be cool here.

Anonymous - Yeah, the 3rd one is definitely coming. I still haven't seen the 4th flick so that might be a while. Well, the quickness that DVD's come out these days...

Stef - That is hilarious!! Start wearing your hat backward and sag them pants a little

Craig - Thanks dude. How's the job going?

I love what you do, Eric! BB's always had the best cover art - Folks rave about License to Ill, but I still have a print of "Hello Nasty" on my wall. Looks like your stuff could rival.

Do you hire out?

Eric, after consideration I think you're right. Showing Manhattan in the background from Brooklyn's Promenade of Brooklyn Heights helps to put things in perspective.

It's kind of like saying that Bklyn's in the "cat-bird seat" even when it comes to the best view of NYC.

Sorry I ever doubted you, my brother. We'll talk when you get home.

you are right. paul's boutique is their best album. i think it's the best hip hop album of all time. it was waaaay ahead of it's time and wasn't given the credit it deserved in my opinion. and yes the dvd is the coolest dvd with all the options. hell of a deal for $20 or whatever it was.

anyway, i make old school hip hop t-shirts and i'd love to trade you some for these beastie posters when you get done with them. check out my website at www.manifestworldwide.com. i've actually got a paul's boutique shirt coming out in november with the new fall/ holiday collection. keep up the good work! you inspire alot of people.

Chad, glad you think I could bring something to the table. Not sure where I'll be in November yet, but I'll give you a shout if I can do it.

Thomas, I do freelance every now and then when the work schedule opens up. Just leave an e-mail & I'll get back to you.

Manifest, very cool tees indeed. Love the ones with the rockbox. Once I post the finals, I'll e-mail ya back.
